One, an old soldier and clever, commands Europe’s mightiest army. Already he has taken Wales and subjugated her once proud people. Now, Scotland comes to his grasp, her people all but conquered, her king deposed by his will. The "Hammer of the Scots", he needs to destroy but one family to complete his scheme.

The other, a wealthy young lord and newly wed, is scion of the prominent de Brus family. Trained in chivalric warfare but inexperienced as a battlefield commander, he is the one man in Scotland who may yet foil the old man’s aim. That places him in dire peril.

The old soldier has but one surviving son, spoiled and arrogant, whose passions have yet to be satisfied. One day, if he lives, he will inherit his father’s crown and all his kingdom. Will that domain include Scotland?

The young lord has a new wife, daughter of his antagonist’s most trusted general. Beautiful and strong willed, she has but one wish… to be her husband’s lady. But, she sacrifices her desires and takes up arms to follow him to war. At what price?

Four fearless brothers of the young lord willingly follow him into danger and hardship to attain an independent Scotland. Only one will survive.

A teenaged Scot, his father executed in London’s Tower for supporting William Wallace and his mother turned out of the family’s home, joins the “rebellious” Scots to have revenge. He will follow his lord to the death… and beyond.

The excessive earl, minion of the English king, sent to quash the Scots' "rebellion" by returning with the head of the "rebel king" in a box given for the purpose. His passions run to excess in all things, money, power, sex, drink, food, and cruelty.

Nephew to the young Scottish lord, he nevertheless finds himself on the side of the English where he has given his allegiance. Though his heart yearns to return to his own people, he must plot and war against them, having made his pact with the Devil.

The lord’s young squire, son of his good friend James the Stewart, answers the call of war though but a boy of twelve. When he is met with an armored knight intent on killing him, his youth is quickly ended.

A young woman, wife of an old earl, deserts her life of comfort and ease to join the “rebellion,” sacrificing her young life to the cause of her country’s freedom.

Two brothers, daring smugglers along the coasts and among the islands, find their place in the fight for Scottish independence, sailing into danger from nature as well as from the enemy for their king and country.
